Vestibular Physiotherapy

Vestibular physiotherapists are registered physical therapists who have obtained additional training in assessing and treating symptoms caused by vestibular disorders such as dizziness, vertigo, and imbalance.

Massage therapy involves the manipulation of the soft tissues of the body, Massage Therapy including muscles, connective tissues, tendons, ligaments and joints. It can prevent and help alleviate discomforts associated with everyday and occupational stresses, as well as muscular overuse and many chronic pain conditions. Massage helps restore normal functioning of the body by improving circulation and flexibility while decreasing myofascial tension and pain. In stress related conditions, it can relieve tension headaches and reduce the physical effects of occupational stress and fatigue. It has an overall tonic effect on the body and promotes a general feeling of well-being, aiding in relaxation.

Kinesiology is the scientific study of human movement, performance and function. Kinesiology applies the science of anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, psychology and neuroscience to human movement and function. Kinesiology employs evidence based scientific research and assessment to assist in the prevention and rehabilitation of injury, lifestyle diseases and other physiological conditions, along with the enhancement of human performance, in environments such as work and sport.

Sarah completed her BSc in physiotherapy in 1998 at the University of Cape Town. She practiced in a variety of clinics and public health settings then opened her own clinic. In 2010 she felt the need to grow her knowledge and skills and complete the IFOMT accredited Masters in Manual and Manipulative Therapy from Stellenbosch University. Subsequently she continued in the private practice while also teaching modules and mentoring students from the undergraduate and post graduate programs. Sarah enjoys treating a wide variety of musculoskeletal and pain conditions.

Her treatment philosophy is patient centered, aiming to empower her patients with self-efficacy in managing their conditions through rehabilitation and informed decision making.

In the last five years Sarah has trained in female pelvic health physiotherapy and has made that a significant part of her practice.

Sabrina Chapman completed her Bachelor of Human Kinetics with a concentration in Clinical Exercise Physiology at the University of British Columbia Okanagan. During her time at UBCO, she worked with the Athletics department to improve and help coach the strength and conditioning program of varsity athletes.

Sabrina grew up in South Surrey playing soccer, volleyball, and weightlifting but eventually found a passion for exercise through Mint Club Athletics, a strength and conditioning program for youth female athletes, where she was a member and grew into a coach. As she learned more about exercise and health, she discovered the love for helping people reach their goals especially in fitness. She is currently working to get into physiotherapy school but will continue working as a Kinesiologist.

Outside the clinic, Sabrina also works at Elysian Health and does many other physical pursuits like coaching volleyball and dryland training for hockey athletes, going for walks with her friends, and doing Muay Thai (a new interest that has sparked her curiosity).

Kenny Hagerty previously worked as a Diabetes Medical Sales Representative and in 2013 became a graduate from the West Coast College of Massage Therapy’s 3000 hour program. Kenny’s passion is working with people and helping them with their rehabilitation. He enjoys deep tissue work and utilizing various techniques such as myofascial release and trigger point release. Using these treatment methods combined with passive/active movements, his goal as your massage therapist is to restore optimum function and movement throughout the body. Kenny also places a strong focus on continuing education especially in the fields of myofascial release, repetitive stress disorders, and anatomy.

Born and raised in Burnaby, Gurpreet followed her passion for global health by completing her Bachelor’s degree in Health Sciences at Simon Fraser University. Growing up playing soccer and eventually boxing, Gurpreet realized the impact that injuries can have in preventing people from participating in the activities that they love.

With a zest for adventure and keen interest in human movement, Gurpreet then moved to Australia where she completed her Doctor of Physiotherapy degree at the University of Melbourne. While in Australia, Gurpreet gained experience in a variety of rehabilitation settings and started managing injuries from the sidelines as a sports trainer for an Australian Football team.

Her enthusiasm for injury rehab lead to her to London, England where she helped treat Premier League soccer players at a recognized FIFA Medical Centre of Excellence. Gurpreet strongly believes in educating her patients and empowering them with the tools necessary to reach their rehab goals.

With a strong passion for holistic wellness, she’s travelled to Tuscany to become a Registered Yoga Teacher and is also certified in Clinical Pilates. Gurpreet loves to combine Yoga and Pilates principles with traditional manual handling and exercise therapy for a unique and well-rounded approach to treatment. Monica Jochlin is an experienced Physiotherapist who graduated from Simon Fraser University with a Bachelor of Science degree in 2009. She then completed her Master of Physiotherapy at the University of British Columbia. She has post-graduate training in soft tissue release. Monica completed the Kinetacore dry needling course in Atlanta and New Hampshire, and includes IMS (Intra-muscular Stimulation) as part of her treatment plan with clients. With a strong focus on continuing to advance her training and expertise, Monica travelled to Portugal to take intensive manual therapy courses. She is now a certified orthopedic manual therapist (COMT). Furthermore, Monica has completed additional certifications and training for treatment of vestibular disorders and concussion management. Monica is also trained in the BradCliff Breathing Method and has completed her advanced training in shoulder rehabilitation.

Monica has a passion for exercise and rehabilitation and works with clients of all ages and athletic backgrounds. Through her clinical experience, she developed a keen interest in post-operative rehabilitation, sports injuries and hand therapy. Monica also has experience working with populations recovering from spinal cord injuries at GF Strong Rehabilitation Center, post-mastectomy rehabilitation and a variety of neurological conditions. Her volunteer experience includes working with the Special Olympics of BC and at the Vancouver Olympics of 2010.

Monica was an avid athlete growing up participating in various sports including basketball, soccer, dodge ball and curling. Her passion however was volleyball, playing at the elite level for the Fraser Valley Volleyball Club, the Simon Fraser University club team and coaching the Holy Cross Junior girls Volleyball team. She has completed level 10 at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Piano, generating her interest in hand therapy. Monica is also bilingual and is fluent in Polish.

Monica uses a combination of evidence-based treatment approaches such as education, hands-on manual therapy, and exercise prescription to promote function and mobility. She focuses on detailed assessments and individualized treatment programs to help each client achieve their personal physiotherapy goals. Sabrina received her Masters of Physical Therapy from the University of British Columbia. Prior to physical therapy Sabrina obtained her Master of Science in Kinesiology and worked at an exercise physiology laboratory studying the effects of exercise in both health and disease states.

While at UBC Sabrina competed collegiately in both cross country running and track and field. She has represented Canada in both cross country and road running, and in 2016 won the Victoria Marathon.

Christian is a Registered Massage Therapist who graduated from the Langara College program after obtaining his Kinesiology degree from UBC in 2016. He has extensive experience teaching and leading classes in the sports, fitness and kinesiology fields. He was the Fitness Coordinator at UBC Bodyworks, and has taught classes in the areas of cardiac rehab, joint replacement education, seniors weight training, and personal training.

Christian believes in supporting his massage therapy clients through excellent communication, exceptional hands-on treatment, movement-based intervention strategies and personalized education. He strongly believes that massage therapy, combined with other interventions such as physiotherapy and exercise therapy/strength training, will help the people that he works with build self-efficacy and resiliency for a healthier life.

Ningning graduated from Simon Fraser University with a Bachelor of Science degree in biomedical physiology. Throughout her undergraduate studies, Ningning was immersed in a variety of activities, ranging from volunteering in a rehab care facility, conducting research in a molecular cardiac physiology lab, instructing on a glider pilot’s course through the air cadet program, to exploring trails with the SFU hiking club. In the end, she found that she was most passionate about working with people, and fascinated by human physiology and movement. This led her to pursue a Master of Physical Therapy degree at UBC. Ningning has also obtained her Level 1 Certificate of the Advanced Integrated Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy Program through the Orthopaedic Division of Canadian Physiotherapy Association.

With over 10 years experience working in the service industry, Ningning understands building strong relationships with clients is essential to providing quality care. She will listen to your story, take you through a detailed assessment and work with you to develop a plan that suits your needs whether it is getting back to the activities you love, preparing for a surgery, or preventing future injuries! She believes in using an active therapeutic approach that is person-centered, and hands-on, incorporating exercise, education, manual therapy, and other modes of treatment to help you achieve your goals.

Outside the clinic Ningning enjoys going on bike rides with her golden retriever, hiking with friends, attending yoga class or exploring an indoor rock climbing wall —a new endeavour of hers. She also has an ongoing veggie garden project (Ask her what she’s planting!).

Cheyenne Laatsch completed her Bachelor’s in Kinesiology at UBC in the interdisciplinary stream, which allowed her to focus on her passions: athletics and rehabilitation. This fueled her drive to complete her Masters of Physical Therapy at UBC in 2017 to improve her ability to help others attain their goals; whether that be managing a chronic disease, recovering from a new injury or completing their first marathon! Having been heavily immersed in sport throughout her life, Cheyenne is no stranger to injury and the work it takes to come back from one. She has an interest in all types of sporting injuries and a special interest in the shoulder, back and ankle. Cheyenne’s approach includes education, manual therapy, correction of body biomechanics, exercise prescription and building an individualized rehab program. Her philosophy: exercise is medicine.
